Nine Moroccan places, a memory recognised by UNESCO

From medinas to ancient ruins, discover Morocco’s nine UNESCO World Heritage properties.

Nine gateways to our history

Fez, Marrakesh and Ait-Ben-Haddou joined the World Heritage List in the 1980s. Meknes, Volubilis and Tétouan followed in the 1990s, then Essaouira, Mazagan in El Jadida and Rabat between 2001 and 2012. Each inscription refers to a property and its UNESCO-defined boundaries.

Recognition and responsibility

These places tell different stories: urban life, earthen architecture, maritime exchange and ancient heritage. Skills, residents and transmission also bring heritage to life. Our “Historic places” page presents all nine entries, their inscription years and sources.
