Rachid Yazami: a contribution at the heart of batteries

Reversible lithium insertion in graphite helps shape rechargeable battery technology.

Progress in materials science

In 1980, during his doctorate in Grenoble, Rachid Yazami demonstrates reversible lithium insertion in graphite. This contributes to the development of the graphite anode in lithium-ion batteries.

A shared prize

In 2014 he receives the Charles Stark Draper Prize with John Goodenough, Akira Yoshino and Yoshio Nishi. It recognises essential contributions to rechargeable batteries, rather than the isolated invention of one researcher.
